Title:  "Two Magazines and Three Editors Fight the Cultural Cold War"

Abstract:
Two magazines and three editorial philosophies embody the diversity of the Western approach to fighting what has become known as the "Cultural Cold War"--the campaign to win the sympathy of leftist Europeans in the 1950s. PERSPECTIVES USA, founded by publisher James Laughlin and funded by the Ford Foundation, sought to disengage entirely from politics and let modernist art serve as propaganda for the superiority of the West. ENCOUNTER, published by the Congress for Cultural Freedom and funded covertly by the CIA, was split in its approach to propaganda: the American editors wanted a muscular, even belligerent editorial approach, while the British editors preferred a more nuanced strategy.

All interested faculty, graduate students, and other parties are invited.

Refreshments will be served.
