in Qualitative Research: Presumptions and Strategies
Like other types of qualitative research, the use of focus groups involves
clarification of the researcher's assumptions regarding epistemology,
especially the character and construction of knowledge; development of
methodologies that resonate with one's epistemological presumptions; and
choice of methods that allow effective gathering of data while avoiding
potential obstacles. In this session we will draw on the experiences of
presenters and participants in focus group research, and identify helpful
resources and promising approaches for further exploration.

Maureen R. O'Brien, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Theology and Director of Pastoral Ministry, Duquesne University, and Helen Blier, Ph.D., Researcher, Educator, Consultant, provided a workshop on Focus Groups in Qualitative Research: Presumptions and Strategies. Forty-three persons attended the workshop and, following the well-prepared and informative lead of the two presenters, discussed the issues of the researcher's assumptions regarding epistemology, especially the character and construction of knowledge; development of methodologies that resonate with one's epistemological presumptions; and choice of methods that allow effective gathering of data while avoiding potential obstacles.
