Ressentiment and Anti-Semitism in Max Scheler's Social Psychology

Abstract:

This paper shows how Max Scheler's attempts to synthesize Nietzsche and Freud's ideas about "mass psychology" under the umbrella of phenomenology (1915) was marred by the incorporation of naturalistic and racist assumptions that were commonplace among European intellectuals, but at variance with basic principles of phenomenological research, and/or of social psychology pursued from a human science perspective. The
resurgence of high brow, low key anti-Semitism among the intelligensia and political leadership of contemporary Europe (the Holocaust notwithstanding), and their role in facilitating the cruder, more violet varieties of anti-Semitic prejudice, are also examined
